FAMILY LIFE He was born in Legnano (Italy) on January 24, 1945. He married Marisa Bussandri on January 3, 1970. They live in Opera, nearby Milano. They have two sons: Marco, married with Maddalena Passi, and Matteo, married with Annalisa Gebbia. They became grandparents of Giovanna (2000), Francesca (2002), Paolo (2003), Giacomo (2003), Giovanni (2006) and Laura (2009).
EDUCATION University 5-years based Laurea Degree in Electronic Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, December 1969.
MILITARY RECORD He served in the Air Force of Italy - Fligth Engineering Services branch - from 1970 to 1971, at the rank of Lieutenant, in charge for apparatus technical testing, both at manufacturer laboratories and at the airport fields.
PRESENT APPOINTMENTS a) Professor of Healthcare Information Systems and Telemedicine + Biolanguages and Bioarchives at the Engineering Faculty of the Politecnico of Milano. b) Director of e-Health LAB at the Bioengineering Department. c) Additional appointments are with the City University of London, with the Centro di Ingegneria Biomedica of the Italian National Research Council, and with the Cilea Interuniversity Consortium for Information and Communication Technologies. d) Director of the post-graduate 2nd level Master Program of Telemedicine and Telehealth, formerly cooperated with the Cefriel Consortium of the Politecnico di Milano for advanced education in Information and Communication Technology. e) Professor of Advanced Health Information Systems in the Bioengineering PhD Program of the Politecnico di Milano. f) Coordinator of the Visible Human Dataset - Milano Mirror Site, a cooperation of the Politecnico di Milano with the US National Library of Medicine, at US National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.

PERIODS ABROAD As winner of NATO Senior Fellowships, both in 1979 and in 1987 he was Visiting Scientist at the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology Division, on the MIT campus Cambridge, Mass., USA. His office was at the historical and disappeared building 20, where now is the impressive Ray and Maria Stata Center.
RESEARCH FOCUS His research activities focus is in the field of medical data bases, repositories of bio-images and bio-signals, with emphasis on quantitative electrocardiography, multimedia databases, integration of clinical examination texts with their images, the distributed electronic patient record and its users, Internet for Medicine and Healthcare, sustainable privacy of patient digital data, policies and programs for continuing education of ICT human resources in clinical and healthcare institutions.
ROLES IN SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS From 1987 Associate Editor, from 1994 European Deputy Editor, from 2000 he is Deputy Editor of the journal "Computers in Biology and Medicine". From 1989 to 1999 he was member of the Advisory Board of the Journal "Methods of Information in Medicine". For many years has been member of the "Comité de patronage" of the Journal "Revue Europeenne de Biotechnologie Medicale".
ROLES IN SCIENTIFIC AND PROFESSIONAL GROUPS He is Member and he was Vice-President of the Italian Association of Medical Informatics (AIIM). He is Member of the Italian National Group on Bioengineering of the Italian National Research Council and former Associate Member of the Italian Association of Hospital Cardiologists (ANMCO). He was member of Working Group 5 on "Medical Devices" of CEN/TC251. Former President of the corresponding Italian Medical Informatics Commission for Standardization at UNI (UNI is the major Italian Agency for Standards). He is member of American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) where in the 2000 became member of the International Committee.

At the proceedings level his regular presences relates to the American Medical Informatics Association and Medinfo, plus for periods, the IEEE Computers in Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology annual meetings.
